Add Defend HQ to Chrome.
It takes about 3 minutes.

Defend HQ isn’t in the Chrome Web Store yet, so for now you add it by hand. Follow these five steps on the computer you want to protect. It’s free, with no card and no account.

  1. Download Defend HQ

Chrome saves it in your Downloads folder.

Download Defend HQ 5.7.1 A .zip file (1.0 MB) for Google Chrome on Windows, Mac and Chromebook.
  2. Unzip it

    1. Open your Downloads folder. (Press the Windows key and E together, then click Downloads.)
    2. Right-click “defend-hq-extension-5.7.1-chrome.zip” and choose Extract All…
    3. Click Extract. A folder called “defend-hq-extension-5.7.1-chrome” opens.

Keep this folder. Chrome uses it every time it starts. A good home for it is your Documents folder. Move it there now, before the next step.

  3. Open Chrome’s extensions page

Click the address bar at the top of Chrome, type this, and press Enter:

    chrome://extensions

Then turn on Developer mode, with the switch in the top-right corner of that page.

Websites can’t open this page for you. That’s one of Chrome’s safety rules.
  4. Choose the Defend HQ folder

Click Load unpacked, at the top left. Choose the “defend-hq-extension-5.7.1-chrome” folder, then click Select Folder (Windows), Select (Mac) or Open (Chromebook).

Defend HQ appears in the list, with the green shield.

If Chrome says the manifest file is missing, a different folder was chosen. Choose the one with a file called manifest.json inside.
  5. Follow the welcome page

Defend HQ opens its welcome page by itself: who it’s for, pinning the green shield, choosing your trusted person, and what it looks after. Then you’re ready.

After that, just browse as usual. Defend HQ steps in when something needs a second look.
